    Metal-Archives normally does it for me. However there are the tards who label something "mallcore" when they could just put Metalcore, Deathcore or something. Too many troo kvlt ass-hats there.

    Quality control.  Without it, there is anarchy.

    Which is why MR is the best site on the web for metal, Rev. Quality Control. Like I said before this is THE site for intelligent, coherent, tolerant discussion!

    AMG isn't cut out for metal. Look up their entry for Death and you'll see why. They have the genre listing as rock and the following listed under 'Styles':

        * Death Metal/ Black Metal
        * Heavy Metal
        * Progressive Metal
        * Thrash

    That's too inaccurate coming from a site that thinks of itself as an Encyclopedia for music on the internet and is supposedly made up of world class music journalists.

    I personally let my ears guide me on genre identification and then verify it on Metal Archives, MR and assorted discussion on the internet.

    It's stupid to combine death metal with black metal. They're two totally different "styles" of metal.

    I could never fathom how they arrived at the conclusion. Oh well.

    Check out who AMG thinks follows Death's blueprint: Morbid Angel and Emperor amongst them. MA are contemporaries of Death and it's an insult to say they followed Death's path especially considering that they were far more technical than Death and less melodically inclined. To include Emperor is just plain ignorance.

    Ha. That only goes to support your argument that AMG isn't cut out for metal.

    Re: Genres

    I never worry too much about what genres groups fall into - I can pretty much always check out a couple of a band's songs on their myspace and then decide for myself. The only time it's really an issue is when I'm tagging MP3s for the iPod, and I usually keep it as broad as possible. If nothing comes to mind, I use the same method as Reason's Voice - just tag it "Metal" and be done with it Wink

    If someone wants to try to describe a band with "post-viking doomcore" or some other crazy combination of genres, I don't really care, but if you do it with a straight face I will probably ridicule you Stick out tongue

    I thinks he means combining them as far as genre delineation goes, rather than combining the actual styles musically.

    Anyway I don't really ever 'check;' I just listen and decide based on my own internal classification system. It's not like there's any real authority that determines what the 'right' genre tag for a band is.

    Also, seconded on the M-A having too many tr00 kvlt asshats. They won't let Today Is the Day have a page because they "aren't metal." Fail.

    I somewhat agree with that, but you've got to draw the line somewhere.  It goes back to the subjectivity of genres, and how said asshats perceive a band, and where it stands next to that line.

    It's fine for a band to combine both genres into their music. What I meant is that it's stupid to put death metal and black metal together for classification. They're completely different, obviously, and that means that a band like Cannibal Corpse would recieve the Death Metal/Black Metal tag even though their purely a death metal band.

    Sorry if I took your statement out of context.

    ...but sometimes it does need to be done for classification.  Obviously, not in the case of CC, because that would be erroneous.  But how else would you describe bands that meld the two genres?

    I don't get why they don't allow every band that gets submitted? Surely the more bands = more traffic for them and more advertising revenue. Do they even advertise though? If not, they should and use the cash to upgrade and add a proper search function. But i guess they want to be the authority on what is and whats not 'metal' and get the infinite kvlt points instead with their metal iron curtain.
