Faith No More.  I bought The Real Thing when it first came out and thought it was a not bad album but couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

Fast forward 10 years and I was in a record shop looking for something to buy, couldn't see anything that I wanted so I bought Album Of The Year and totally loved it.  Went out and got their other albums and I still kick myself to this day that I never got to see them live.  I feel such a twat for not seeing the greatness that was FNM.

They were one of the few bands that having acheived commercial success with Real Thing they went and made an album that was completely different instead of making commercial success album 2.

I hope they reform like alot of the bands nowadays.

Godflesh, Katatonia, Neurosis, Porcupine Tree: all bands that I arrived 5-10 years too late for and are now in my all time greats.

    We apologize for the inconvenience.

    Neurosis.

I actually got "Enemy of the Sun" as back as 1996, from reading a fanzine article that said something that it sounded something like "Sabbath crossed with 70's ZZtop riffs played at 16 RPM with lots of percussion". I dismissed them at the time as too slow and weird. Over the years, as I became a Doom fan, I became more open towards sludge/ambiance, and about two years ago I rediscovered this album and got a serious case of Neurosis fanboyism.

Cuando empecé, quería hacer la diferencia. Pasó el tiempo y me limité a hacer mi trabajo. Ahora sólo me limito.

Way too many to name.  I'm still young so theres actually probably about 100 bands out there now that I should be listening to that I don't own.

Darkthrone. Where have I been? I think Captain got me on my Darkthrone kick. Also a couple people here mentioned Negura Bunget and I have to thank you guys for that sweet find as well. I found Allagoch because of this site. This is one of my favorite bands now. They are quenching the Opeth thirst I've had because Opeth have left me kind of uninterested since Blackwater Park. Dark, depressing, and heaviness done right.

Between the Buried and Me--Denied the purchase of Alaska and then almost missed out on one of my new favorites "Colors". Since buying Colors I righted my wrong and purchased Alaska...glad I did.

    Twilight Frost:
I would be remiss if I did not mention the mighty Solitude Aeturnus. If not for this site exploding about them around the time of Alone, I might have completely missed them.

What kills me about SA is that around 1991-1992, I worked with Edgar Rivera's mom in a college computer lab in Dallas.  She mentioned her son was in a band, but I had never heard of them, so I thought it was cool, but didn't really look into it.  She knew I was into music though, so one day she puts me on the phone with him out of the blue and he was REALLY nice and laid back and everything - he encouraged me to check them out - and of course I didn't (I was too into some college/alternative rock stuff at that moment, I suppose).  Anyway, I know he's not even with the band anymore, but I've always thought back to that - if only I would have checked out a show, I'm sure I would have been hooked back then and I could have advanced my metal listening by light years.

So yeah, I was way late to the party with Solitude.  Still burns me that I'm such an idiot...

about 85% of the bands i listen to i'd consider being "late to the party" for...that's just how metal is these days, what sucks is most of em are broken up and not touring anymore, all we can do is dream....

but to contribute, i just bought my first dismember and deicide albums the other day and promptly filled my pants with various hot excretions at the masterful performances

i put off listening to Mayhem for a long time, knowing what they were about, and have always regretted it, but then again, they're not the most productive band

Re: Late to the party...Bands I almost didn't find

Symphony X for sure. Insomnium(Got above the weeping world two weeks ago).Actually, come to think of it, I have been late to the party with most of the bands including Metallica, Testament, Megadeth, Slayer, Exodus. I started getting hardcore into metal only in the last five years. So yea, I have lots and lots of catching up to do. Even At the Gates, I got the Slaughter of the Soul album only two years ago. My first "metal" record was Reload Metallica 10 years ago. At that time I was still a kid and I never considered myself a metal fan back then. Got into the Nu-metal phase when it was on and I am not fucking ashamed to say it. It opened alot of doors for me. Its the mainstreamness of nu metal that actually got me interested into exploring the "dark side of music". A band That I am reallllllly reallllly late with has to be Death. I still haven't got a record by them but definately looking to change that! Another band would be Anthrax....and not really looking to change. Or should I be? Perhaps you guys could enlighten me?

    Err? How does this work?
